Fix Bluetooth problems on Android (2023)

If your car or Bluetooth accessory isn’t connecting to your phone, try the solutions below.

Important:Some of these steps work only on Android 8.0 and up. Learn how to check your Android version.

Step 1: Check Bluetooth basics

  1. Turn Bluetooth off and then on again. Learn how to turn Bluetooth on and off.
  2. Confirm that your devices are paired and connected. Learn how to pair and connect via Bluetooth.
  3. Restart your devices. Learn how to restartyour Pixel phone or Nexus device.

Can't pair with car

Step 1: Clear devices from your phone's memory

  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. TapConnected devicesFix Bluetooth problems on Android (1)Previously connected devices. If you don't see "Previously connected devices," tap Bluetooth.

Step 2: Clear phonesfrom your car's memory

To clear phonespaired with your car, follow your car's manual.

  1. Clear any phonesyou're not currently using.
  2. If you paired your phone and carbefore, clear your phone.

Step 3: Refresh the devicelist, then pair

To learn whetherto pair from your phone or car, check your car’s manual.

    1. Check that your car is discoverable and ready to pair.
    2. Open your phone's Settings app.
    3. TapConnected devices. If you see"Bluetooth," tap it.

    1. Open your phone's Settings app.

    3. Keep this screen open.
    4. On your car's list of devices, pick your phone's name.
    5. If asked, checkthat the PINs shown on yourphone and car's screens match.
    6. TapAllow access to your contacts and call history.
    7. Tap Pair,Accept, orConfirm.

  1. Check that your accessory is discoverable and ready to pair.Follow the instructions that came with your accessory.
    • Often, you'll see a blue light on an accessory when it's ready to pair.
    • You must connect some accessories, like folio keyboards, to your phone or tablet before they can pair.
  2. Refresh your accessory list.
    1. Open your phone's Settings app.
    2. TapConnected devices. If you see"Bluetooth," tap it.
    3. Tap Pair new deviceFix Bluetooth problems on Android (9)your accessory's name.
  3. If your accessory needs a passcode and you don't have it, try 0000 or 1234 (the most common passcodes).

Can't hear music

Important: Not all cars can playmusic by Bluetooth. If the problem is with a car, checkthe car's manual.

  1. Checkthat thevolume is up on your phone and car or accessory.
  2. Check that other devices paired with your phone aren't playing the music.
  3. Check that Media audiois turned on:
    1. Open your phone's Settings app.
    2. TapConnected devices.If you see "Bluetooth," tap it.
    3. If you see Previously connected devices,tap it.
    4. Next to your car or accessory's name, tapSettings Fix Bluetooth problems on Android (10).
    5. Turn on Media audio.

Can't make or get calls

Important: Not all cars can make or get phone calls by Bluetooth. If the problem is with a car, checkthe car's manual.

  1. Check that other devices paired withyour phone aren't getting your calls.
  2. Turn on Phone audio:
    1. Open your phone's Settings app.
    2. TapConnected devices. If you see "Bluetooth," tap it.
    3. If you see Previously connected devices,tap it.
    4. Next to your car or accessory's name, tap Settings Fix Bluetooth problems on Android (11).
    5. Turn on Phone audio.
